Commitment: taking action in real life to push back against authoritarianism
mutual aid (mutual aid is not charity, it’s supporting those around us and being supported by them. The key word is mutual.)
focus on your main area of concern (we do best when we can see progress, focusing on one or two main things allows us to gain traction)
there is no such thing as neutrality (you are either helping the oppressed or the oppressor)
focus on the common good (we’ve been conditioned to focus on the individual good, we need to reconfigure our attention to the common good)
your silence is speaking (examine why you are not speaking and then find ways to move you from not speaking to using your voice)
resistance demands action (it is not an intellectual pursuit)
taking responsibility and rejecting victimhood (we are each responsible for our actions or lack thereof)
making peace with discomfort (discomfort is part of making meaningful change. No one has ever died of discomfort)
make sure to consider the near future (the future, especially the distant future is unknowable, direct your attention and efforts to where you can have an impact in the present and the near future)
remember that your actions today are part of your legacy, choose wisely
build your go bag (particularly if you are a member of a vulnerable group having an exit plan is wise)
build your community
enhance your communal self-sufficiency (make lists of what people have that they are willing to share, like tools, household appliances,
plan for the worst as you work for the best
do not cede your power to others
imagine a just future then make sure your actions are aligned with that vision
do your research, sharpen your critical thinking skills (don’t rely on others, think for yourself)
true resistance demands sacrifice of something, comfort, ease, safety…
support independent media and free speech
don’t be a purist, it’s not necessary (or even desirable) to agree with everyone you’re working with on everything.
